Jericho is a plumber by trade and decided to work in the city to make more money. Given there wasn’t enough money to rent a high-class apartment, the only place that was within the budget is the garage type that was found in the suburbs.
There were many garage apartments in the neighborhood. These buildings were more than 40 years old each and needed drastic improvement. Jericho checked each one and talked with the owners of these places.
Some had a high crime rate while others were peaceful. After checking on the rates and the size of the place, Jericho opted for the one that was close to the police precinct, which was also walking distance to the grocery store.
The owner of the home said that no one has used this for a long time. The place was used for storage and if Jericho wanted it, the plumber will have to fix it up so this can be turned into a secondary home.
Rent for the garage apartment was $300 a month and the bill for water, heat and electricity was not included. A security deposit of $200 also had to be paid up front so a lot of money will have to be shelled out for the first 3 months.
One of the things that Jericho needed to make this place comfortable was furniture. It was difficult to move stuff from town so the best place to get cheap stuff will be the thrift store and the monthly garage sale held in the community hall.
The pickup truck was very useful in moving everything in to the garage. Less than 2 weeks after moving in, the place looked great with a small dinner table, a refrigerator, a couch and a television.
Jericho didn’t have a problem getting clients since the apartment was also used as an office. Whenever someone would call, the plumber will just write down the address, grab the tools then drive over to the client’s house.
Since the garage was a 4-storey apartment, those who lived in the complex would also avail of the services bringing in good money for this young professional.
The contract between Jericho and the landlord was good for one year. Tenants who have stayed there for years informed the plumber that the rates increase annually. When the time came to renew it, free plumbing service was given to the owner of the place in exchange for maintaining the price for another year.
There are many places where people can find an apartment in the city. Those who can’t afford much don’t need the help of an agent to find a garage typed version. The person can find these while reading the newspaper or while driving around the neighborhood.
Anyone who wants to live in this kind of home should talk with the neighbors, make inquiries in the police station, check what amenities are available if any then do some bargaining on the table.
The tenant should realize that this garage apartment might be rundown and cant be compared with bigger and better types in the suburbs. The best thing to do for the time being will be to negotiate a good offer then just make do with it until there is enough money made to move into a bigger place.
